I AM DISSATISFIED WITH MY ATTORNEY. WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW?

DID YOU HIRE THE WRONG ATTORNEY?

You are charged with a serious criminal offense such as a sex crime.

If that isn’t bad enough, it now seems like you may have made a serious mistake in choosing your defense attorney. The attorney was full of fight and passion for your innocence right up to the moment he received the retainer fee. Since then, your attorney:

  • Has not contacted you or visited you in jail as he promised.
  • Has not responded to your family’s attempts to make contact.
  • Has not made or even started an investigation to develop the evidence of your innocence.
  • Does not seem to have a winning strategy.

Even worse, the attorney is pressuring you to take a horrible plea bargain, even though you are innocent.

Sadly, you have hired what is known in legal circles as a “dump truck,” an attorney who just takes your money, but does no work.

THE THREE TYPES OF ATTORNEYS

Type 1 – Charges Little, does little or nothing – You paid $10,000 to litigate a complicated criminal case (such as a sex crime). Even though the attorney technically should do what is necessary for the amount agreed, that is not reality. $10,000 is simply not enough to investigate, organize, prepare and try a serious criminal case. Attorneys who ask for little, generally do little. They often don’t even understand how to prepare and develop a winning strategy. Thus, they will take a serious case with the intention of making the earliest possible plea bargain.

Type 2 – Charges a lot, does little or nothing - You paid this attorney a competitive amount. Unfortunately, too many of these attorneys still don’t know how to develop an effective strategy and still want you to take a plea bargain as soon as possible.

Type 3 – Charges a Fair Price and does the work:

  • Pays attention to you.
  • Pays attention to your family.
  • Makes a Full Investigation.
  • Develops a Winning Strategy.
  • Executes a plan to win the case or (if Necessary) make the best plea agreement possible through a show of strength by Preparation! Preparation! Preparation!

ACKNOWLEDGE AND CORRECT YOUR MISTAKE BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE

By now, you have probably figured out that no matter how often you and your family call and email, you cannot change your current attorney’s work habits.

It’s hard to admit a mistake. It’s hard to say goodbye to an attorney you believed in. Maybe you don’t want to hurt his or her feelings. Maybe you’re suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. However, the longer you stay with an attorney who is not working for you, the worse your chances of prevailing.

It’s time to take responsibility for your mistake and hire a legal team that will actually do the work to produce the best result possible in your case. That means a team with a winning reputation, with the experience and the drive needed to prevail.
